Public Discussion Meeting

Lusaka, Zambia, July 30, 2014

CUTS International Lusaka held a public discussion meeting for the project entitled Assessment of the Structural and Political Economy Issues in the Zambia Sugar Industry, with support from Zambia Economic Advocacy Programme (ZEAP), at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre on July 30, 2014.

CUTS undertook a scoping study on the project with the aim of reviewing what research has been done and the authenticity of these studies. The research also aimed at establishing where the research gaps were. The motivation behind the scoping study is the need to establish whether the prices of sugar are indeed too high or excessively priced in Zambia. A discussion paper has been produced from this scoping study.

The public discussion was held with the aim to inform and provoke debate on emerging issues surrounding the scoping study and to enhance co-operation among the different actors in the sugar sector through exchange of ideas. Of which the outcome of the public discussion will feed in the subsequent research phase.
