CUTS Lusaka hosted a full-day “Sensitization Workshop: Understanding Public Finance Management and Parliamentary Debt Oversight in Zambia.” The event aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the findings derived from CUTS’ research and analysis on the Public Finance Management Act of 2018. It also focused on the critical role of parliamentarians in overseeing, legislating, and representing matters related to the national budget and public debt, which was led by the Public Finance Consultant, Mr. Garth Chisenga Phiri.
Among the key focal points during the workshop was the discussion of the limited Parliamentary oversight over executive decisions regarding loan contraction. During the meeting, the necessity for Parliamentarians to receive comprehensive information regarding the structure, sources of debt, and long-term estimated impacts of debt was emphasized.
