CUTS held an engaging session on managing food waste in Mtendere township, addressing one of Zambia’s pressing challenges, food waste.
Nearly a third of the food produced and sold in the country goes to waste, with fruits and vegetables being particularly affected due to their short shelf life.
To tackle this issue, CUTS has launched a three-month research project titled “Managing Food Waste in Emerging & Established Markets: A Case Study of Mtendere Market.” Supported by the Lusaka City Council and the Youth Climate Action Fund, the project seeks to develop sustainable strategies to reduce food waste, especially among perishable goods, while fostering green job opportunities for youth.
Key activities under the initiative include:
- Conducting research on effective food waste management strategies.
- Running awareness campaigns and workshops to educate stakeholders.
- Engaging youth in food preservation and environmental protection efforts.
Through this initiative, CUTS is working to address regulatory gaps, eliminate harmful waste practices, and promote sustainability. By involving young people, the project not only aims to curb food waste but also empowers them to become active participants in climate action and economic development.
